Brent Bennett is a senior leader who possesses over 20 years of managerial experience.

Brent Bennett is a senior leader who possesses over 20 years of managerial experience. He has been a resident of Newton County since 2001. He was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and moved to the United States to attend college on a soccer scholarship in 1991.

Professional Experience:

Director of Regulatory Compliance for the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) since June 2022.

Responsible for providing regulatory and support services for all certified driver safety programs including CDL, Driver Training, and Motorcycle Safety.

Director of Motor Vehicles, Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) from November 2019 to June 2022.

Responsible for overseeing all MVD operations including title and registration services, IRP/commercial vehicle registration, call center operations, and program support and training for all 159 elected County Tax Commissioners.

Assistant Director of Motor Vehicles, Georgia Department of Revenue from September 2017 to November 2019.

Responsible for Call Center and Lobby Operations.

Director of Motor Vehicles, DeKalb County Tax Commissioner’s Office from January 2007 to August 2017 and September 1999 to March 2004.

Responsible for all tag and title operations including 3 branch locations and call center operations including property tax support.

Brent’s work and leadership experience make him the ideal candidate for Newton County Tax Commissioner as he has managed both the motor vehicle and property tax operations which are under the purview of the Tax Commissioner.

By law, Tax Commissioners are agents of the DOR and as the Motor Vehicle Director at the DOR, Brent was responsible for training and providing support to all 159 County Tax Commissioners. To further demonstrate his experience, as the Motor Vehicle Director in DeKalb County, he championed the metro Atlanta Tag Managers group, including staff from DeKalb, Gwinnett, Fulton, Cobb, Rockdale, and Clayton counties. While at DOR, Brent created a Tax Commissioner Advisory Council consisting of five Tax Commissioners and DOR staff to partner on solutions for tag offices. On a national level, Mr. Bennett is currently a member of the Vehicle Standing Committee at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). AAMVA represents state, provincial, and territorial officials in the United States and Canada who administer and enforce motor vehicle laws.

Brent is an avid soccer fan and has coached for many years at the Covington YMCA.

He was a co-founder of the Covington Galaxy soccer club and in 2010, he was honored as the Covington YMCA volunteer of the year. In the summer of 2022, he was recognized for 20 years of volunteer service with the YMCA. He is also a former Community Board member for the Covington YMCA.

Mr. Bennett earned his BBA majoring in Management in 1995 from James Madison University (JMU) and his Master’s in Human Resources Management from Keller Graduate School of Management in 2001.

He is also a graduate of AAMVA’s Leadership Academy (2022). He is a two-time NCAA All-American and was inducted into the JMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007 for his achievements in soccer. Brent currently lives in Social Circle, Georgia with his wife, Nyasha of 27 years, and their three adult sons, Jabari, an Eastside High School teacher, Jelani, and Jalen. Brent has strong roots within the community as his brother, parents, and in-laws are also residents of Newton County.
